WITH BRENDAN GUY

Welcome to ‘The Ritual Mind’ a journal delving into our mindful communities, daily rituals, their connection to mother earth and the energy she radiates. This month we metaphorically sat down with the marvellous, Mr Brendan Guy. Originally from the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Brendan moved to Sydney almost nine years ago to take a job with Thomas Hamel & Associates. Now, as Senior Interior Designer, he travels frequently working on high-end residential projects in Sydney, across Australia and throughout the world (pandemic permitting of course).

“Growing up by the beach and rugged coastline of Bass Strait, I found the move to Sydney an easy one with the city’s access to incredible beaches,” he explains. It’s this love of the Australian landscape, steeped in childhood memories, his extensive travels and desire to create beautiful spaces that grounds Brendan and connects him, not only to nature but to her healing powers.

Brendan’s first Spiritus Stones bracelet came to him as a gift. “It was from a very close friend, a Manifestation bracelet, which was given to me to mark the occasion of being promoted to Senior Interior Designer. Since then, I have added to my collection, and have also loved giving Spiritus Stones as gifts to friends and family to mark special moments or give light where needed.” It’s what we love about Brendan, this desire to “give light where needed”. And to this we say: Let there be light.

WHAT IS ONE DAILY RITUAL
YOU CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT?

“The one daily ritual I need is a moment to myself to rest, reflect and recharge. I do this by walking to work while listening to contemporary classical (is that a genre?) music - Max Richter, Hania Rani, Alexis Ffrench. I usually switch my phone to airplane mode, so I can go through my thoughts and day without interruption.”

HOW DO YOU RESET AND
RECONNECT WITH YOURSELF,
PEOPLE AROUND YOU
AND NATURE?

“Growing up surrounded by the natural beauty of the Mornington Peninsula, I always return to nature to reconnect with myself. I am a natural heliophile, so I swim first thing in the morning or at dusk when the sun is at its softest. The cold salt water and waves always centre my thoughts and feelings and help reduce any anxiety I might have.”

NATURE OFFERS SO MANY ENERGETIC AND TANGIBLE HEALING RESOURCES. WHAT IS ONE INCREDIBLY MAGICAL SPIRITUAL PRACTICE OR AWAKENING
YOU’VE EXPERIENCED?

“Fifteen years ago, I travelled though Sri Lanka and hiked to the peak of Sri Pada for sunrise. Sri Pada is a revered holy site. On the peak of the mountain there is a footprint in stone that Buddhists believe to be that of Buddha stepping from the heavens. Hindus believe it is that of Lord Shiva, and some Muslims and Christians believe it is that left by Adam when first setting foot on Earth after having been cast out of paradise. The hike to the peak takes about three hours up 6,000 steps and at the top, at that moment the sun breaches the horizon, despite the exhaustion and putting religion aside, the shadow of the mountain casting long and low over Sri Lanka makes you feel like you could touch heaven.”

WE KNOW IT IS HARD TO PLAY FAVOURITES BUT IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE YOUR FAVOURITE GEMSTONE…

“Kyanite. The deep and changing blues make me feel like I have a piece of the ocean on my wrist.”

WORDS TO LIVE BY?

“May the days come easy, and the moments pass slow, and each road leads you where you want to go.”
